High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Brussels on Tuesday, with the Syrian crisis reportedly topping the agenda.
Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, Mogherini said, “We are not a military player in Syria. We decided not to be, and if I can add, we are even proud not being one. But, what we can do, and we are doing day by day more, is using the support we can give politically, but also financially, to the political process based on military agreements,” in reference to the Astana peace talks.
Mogherini added, “the European Union is ready to come in with all its strength — financial, political, organisational, diplomatic, and so on and so forth, convening power, — to support the going back to normal life inside Syria.”
